The Birthday Party: A Theatrical Catastrophe

Nick Ullett

The Oscar-winning director, William Friedkin decided to mount a star-studded new production of Harold Pinter’s first play, The Birthday Party, in LA. It instantly sold out its first month. But its future was in peril. First, Steven Berkoff, the lead actor, loathed the director at first sight! One of them got fired in the second week, but finding a replacement is hard. The first one has health problems and the others back out. The set is built, but as the opening gets closer, panic sets in. What will happen? Will it open?
